NGUYEN MINH THANH, a young artist from Hanoi, explores his spirituality through an intense dialogue with his inner being. Utilizing his own image Thanh depicts the metamorphosis of his own psyche, deeply rooted in Vietnamese Confucian tradition and yet in a dynamic transition. Perhaps this young artist's works mirror the nature of the country today. In the past, Vietnam as a collective society placed no emphasis on the individual, all efforts were made for the good of the country. Thanh represents the new generation of modern day Vietnam, bright, eager and ambitious, racing toward a bright future concentrated in a singular effort to make their mark on the world. Thanh is absorbed by his own image, his own inner journey to lead him on a path of human understanding. Utilizing all kinds of mediums, installation, painting, discourse, Thanh prods and probes his own image as if this dissection will lead him to the essence of self. A very accomplished and internationally recognized artist, Thanh was the recipient of the Visiting Arts/Delfina International Fellowship in London Oct. 2003 – June 2004 and has participated in the Fukuoka Triennial, the Biennale in Korea and other international exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, Holland, USA and other countries.
